The term Litany is derived from the Greek word lite which means 'prayer'. Originally the term was applied to any prayer of supplication repeated often. Later, the litany was introduced into the liturgy with the clergy leading the prayer and the people responding.
While only five litanies are approved by the Church for public prayers, there are also numerous other litanies of devotion of the people which are prayed as part of private prayer.
This booklet includes the five litanies officially approved by the Church and a selection of the most popular litanies for private devotion.
