Electing the Pope is the exclusive right of all cardinals under eighty years of age. Within three weeks of the papacy becoming vacant either through death or retirement of the Pope they gather in one of the oldest electoral assemblies of the world, the conclave. They have no contact with the outside miner letters, telephones, radios, tape recorders, TVs, PCs or any other means of external communication. Their isolation ends only after they have elected the Pope by a two-thirds majority.
