Icons are the embodiment of a long tradition of meditation on the fundamental truths of the Christian faith. This book is a modest contribution to that tradition and offers a small selection of icons that can be used as a means to prayer and contemplation. In preparation for such meditation the author traces in three short but lucid and comprehensive chapters the history of icons, the technique of painting them and their meaning and symbolism. The icons presented here are chosen to illustrate the salvation history through the main events in the life of Jesus. The important place which Mary the Mother of Jesus occupies in this story is acknowledged by the inclusion of three Marian icons. The series is concluded with a meditation on the Trinity based on Rublev's icon.
