All Christians believe that Christ, our Saviour, is ‘the image of the invisible God’ (Col.1:15). From the earliest Christian times believers have etched on rock, carved and painted images (icons) of Christ, to make him and the mysteries of salvation more accessible. In 1408 Russia’s master iconographer, mystic and saint, Andrei Rublev, was commissioned to paint an icon of Christ the Saviour. His serene masterpiece was painted in turbulent times, then lost for many years and eventually found, in 1919, damaged, in a cowshed. This simple icon is full of Rublev’s prayerful theology and, like his most famous icon, The Hospitality of Abraham (often called the Old Testament Trinity), an inspiring focus for prayer and meditation.
