This book contains the Lent 2011 meditations given by Fr Cantalamessa to the Papal Household, in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI.

Against the background of Benedict XVI’s two encyclicals devoted to the theme of charity (Deus caritas est and Caritas in veritate), Fr Cantalamessa shows that when trying to define the different meanings of the word “love”, we must begin from the ultimate source of love - which is God.

He shows how two of these definitions - eros and agape cannot be separated because they are united to that same source. Particular attention is dedicated to the qualities with which, according to the New Testament, love must be clothed. It must be a “sincere” love, without hypocrisy, but also “effective”, not consisting simply in sentiments and words, but in concrete gestures with regard to others. In short, a love which starts from the heart but passes through the hands! The last chapter is dedicated to the love “of which there is none greater’, that of Christ on the cross.
